City of Vienna
Vienna, Austria
Vienna is the national capital, largest city, and one of nine states of Austria. Vienna is Austria's most populous city and the 6th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union. Vienna is located in northeastern Austria, at the easternmost extension of the Alps in the Vienna Basin.
Existing infrastructure
Vienna is among the few cities for which a detailed annual energy balance is available. It covers Vienna’s annual energy demand and supply and it is prepared and updated by Statistics Austria [1]. In 2016, the primary energy supply reached around 41.86 TWh (13.7% locally produced, 87.7% imported, 1.4% exported). The final energy consumption by fuel shows 20.7% for gas, 22% for electricity, 16.8% for district heating, 34.2% for motor fuel, 3.8% for renewable energy (biofuel, wood, solar) 2.5% for heat oil.

The installed local heat capacity reached around 2880 MW. The distribution of DH-generation by energy source shows 24% import, 47% CHP-gas, 22% waste incineration, 4% CHP-biomass, and 3% heat plants. Future estimation shows a shear of 24% geothermal heat supply.
